Learning Spaces
[Participatory Design]
The project „Learning Spaces“ was a cooperation between Hochschule Anhalt, Dessau Department of Design and Bibliothek Südvorstadt “Walter Hofmann”, in Leipzig. The main idea: design students using the Participatory Design approach to explored the interactions between teen-agers and the library.
This project was the result of the "Participatory Design" course (part of the Master of Integrated Design program) guided by Jennifer Schubert and Jördis Dörner. Where twelve designers with different backgrounds and nationalities, facilitated and evaluated a learning experience workshop.
The goal: to find insights to make the library more attractive for teenagers. The ideal place for this exploration was the library itself. They opened their doors for a full-day workshop where designers and teens ideated together.
Now a bit of theory: The Participatory Design involves stakeholders as co-designers, it means to get to know their perspective, wear their shoes, and to design for and with them. It's a method that helps to have a better understanding for who we, designers, design for.
We gathered the process in a publication regarding the different stages of the project. Aspects like, purpose, conception, methods, prototyping, observations from the experience, and some design proposals for further use in the library space, are contained there.
Also, we shared with the University community our experience with an exhibition. There we showed the workshop structure as a timeline and the results of each activity.
The multi-kulti designers class. Thanks guys!
